Mature Skin SPMU: A Natural Hairstroke Brow Journey
Creating soft, subtle brows for a client in her 70s
One of the things I hear quite often from women considering semi-permanent makeup (SPMU) is:
“I don't want my brows to look too dark or blocky.” And honestly, I completely understand. For many of my mature clients, the goal isn't to have bold, dramatic brows. It's often about bringing back some of the definition and shape that has gradually been lost, while still looking completely natural.
This lovely client, who is in her 70s, wanted exactly that. She wanted her brows to look soft, subtle and natural, with some colour and definition, but nothing too dark or overly done. So I thought I'd share her brow journey with you.
Before: Very little brow definition
When I first saw her natural brows, she didn't have a lot of definition to work with. Most of her existing brow hairs were very light and they had become increasingly sparse from the middle of the brow towards the tail. So, the goal wasn't to create a completely new set of brows… It was to bring back the shape and definition she had gradually lost, while keeping the result soft enough to suit her age and features.
This is something I always consider when working with a client —it's not simply about deciding what brow shape looks nice, but more about looking at what the client already has, listening to what they want and working out how I can enhance it.
She came in for a consultation and we discussed about her goals, suitability, having realistic expectations and any medical history. I also did a mockup on her brows (of one my favourite part), as this is very important to help her visualise the brows and get an idea of what it could look like.
So in the end, I chose machine hairstrokes technique. The aim was to create the appearance of individual brow hairs rather than a heavier makeup effect. This suited what my client was looking for because she wanted the illusion of having brow hairs, but still wanted it to look soft.
Working with delicate, sensitive skin
One of the things that became particularly important during this treatment was her skin. Her skin was very sensitive and delicate, and it was especially thin around the tails of her brows. As I worked in these areas, the skin was more prone to bleeding, and there was also a little bruising (but this is totally normal). So, this meant I had to be particularly careful and light-handed around the area.
What this means is that when her brows heals, her tails will be slightly lighter than the rest of the brows (3rd picture). This is where the touch up comes in, usually done between 6-12 weeks after your first session,
Her brows immediately after treatment
It can definitely be a BIG shock for someone who has fair hair and has never had anything done to their brows before, especially getting semi-permanent brows right off the bat.
Immediately after SPMU, brows can look stronger than they will once they have healed. This is completely normal and is one of the reasons I always remind my clients:
Don't judge your brows on day one.
The brows will go through a healing process, and the colour will soften and settle as they heal. So, while I always take care to create a result that I love immediately after treatment, the healed result is what I'm really interested in, and you should be too.
Around 7 weeks later: the healed result
Around seven weeks after her appointment, my client kindly sent me a picture of her healed brows. And this is where you can really see how much softer the result has become.
The colour has settled, the brows look more subtle, and the overall shape gives her much more definition without looking heavy.
I am over the moon of her healed results, especially she was nervous after the treatment of how dark it looked, but I always say to all my clients, is to trust the process.
The most important part: she loved them
She was really happy with her healed brows, and I was also contacted by her granddaughter, who kindly shared how pleased she was with the result “…it’s amazing… she’s so much happier in herself too more confident !”
Messages like this mean so much to me because they remind me why I love what I do. It's not about creating the biggest or boldest transformation.
